In keeping with all his wines, Marcello’s Valpolicella Classico is both elegant and exceedingly drinkable, assisted by a very reasonable and refreshing 12.5% abv. There’s nothing forced or confected about this wine: it’s discreet on the nose, with crunchy, peppery black fruit; it’s as if you can ‘smell’ the lofty mineral rich soils on which his pergola-trained vines are to be found.

The palate takes you on to new ground: still understated yet here the pretty fruit swells and broadens to reveal a delicious, currant ripeness and charm. The whole experience kept in trim thanks to exciting ribes acidity. I shared a bottle with my family only the other day as the perfect accompaniment to a roast chicken lunch, and could have done with another!
