Novaia’s a new name on Berrys’ Italian books. This wine combines single vineyard quality with a bit of bottle age too.

I managed to snaffle the last of Marcello's 2007 vintage Valpolicella Classico Superiore: a wine that heralds from a single site ('I Cantoni') that lies at 400 metres above sea level, giving the wine added focus & grip. It underwent a month's 'appassimento' prior to being vinified and then aged for 18 months in French barriques (the size of oak more a cnsequence of the current winery's small size). Very much a 'baby Amarone', Marcello's succulent yet sapid Superiore is rich with clove notes, yet finely textured throughout. Drinking now with pork, roast or otherwise
