2010 Te Mata Estate, Elston Chardonnay, Hawkes Bay, New Zealand

Te Mata Estate, Elston Chardonnay, Hawkes Bay, New Zealand
Hawke’s Bay on the east coast of New Zealand’s North Island was quick to develop a reputation for its red wines from Bordeaux blends and whites from chardonnay.

Te Mata, whose name derives from a local Maori legend, is the oldest established winery in the region. The first vineyards were planted on the property as long ago as 1892, though it has been under John Buck’s stewardship since the 1970s that Te Mata has really come to the fore.

Originally a single vineyard wine Elston has, from 1989, become an assemblage of the finest wines from eleven plots within Te Mata Estate's six Chardonnay vineyards. The unusual 2010 growing season has resulted in an extraordinary Elston. Already low cropping chardonnay vines had their yield further reduced by a cold snap during the spring flowering.

This, coupled with the mild summer heat and an extended dry autumn, have produced an arresting intensity of aroma and flavour: Dry yet rich with rounded acidity and superb balance. The white stone fruit character continues from the nose along with notes of biscuit and citrus. This is a richly textured wine with exuberant fruit characters.
