The vines for this 100% Syrah cuvée are located around the villages of Limony, Chavanay and St Pierre-de-Boeuf. The 10% new oak is cleverly integrated with ripe red berry fruit entwined with peppers and spice, and firmer, steely notes at the back, harnessing quality.

Tasting chez Villard is something of a test of stamina, albeit a most enjoyable test. M Villard is not short of an opinion and he is most certainly not short of wine in an impressive portfolio. The main problem for us is that of omission…….the temptation to buy everything is pronounced, such is the variety and quality of the wines, but we have to exercise rigorous self-discipline, especially difficult with 2010, a vintage which François extolls for its freshness and structural harmony.

Lush, spicy, blueberry nose which has charm and vigour. Rich and fleshy, this is a broad, sumptuous style of St Joseph that conveys the finesse of the granite. Plenty of finesse and length.
