Made up for three homogenous parcels in Chavanay, all, needless to say, steeply terraced, this is aged for eight months in barrique, of which 20% is new. François describes this as his ‘fruit cuvée’, and there is certainly no shortage of apricot and honey here, but also an impressive grip at the back of the palate which will soften beautifully after it comes across the Channel.

Tasting chez Villard is something of a test of stamina, albeit a most enjoyable test. M Villard is not short of an opinion and he is most certainly not short of wine in an impressive portfolio. The main problem for us is that of omission…….the temptation to buy everything is pronounced, such is the variety and quality of the wines, but we have to exercise rigorous self-discipline, especially difficult with 2010, a vintage which François extolls for its freshness and structural harmony.

100% Viognier. Very floral and lifted. I might not get that it was Condrieu on the nose, taking it for a Viognier from elsewhere. Very broad and rich and honeyed on the finish though. Really expansive. Peachy. Long.
