2010 St Joseph, Terres d'Encre, Domaine Georges Vernay

St Joseph, Terres d'Encre, Domaine Georges Vernay
Vernay’s wines all have evocative names and this one is particularly pleasing, all the more so when one has a glass of the dark, almost inky liquid, in one’s hand. The vines are located on the granitic slopes behind Chavanay in the north of the appellation. This 100% Syrah exhibits plenty of red fruit charm, but with polished ‘proper’ tannins from one-year-old barriques, and a fresh, hedgerow character, with hints of crushed rock, bay-leaf and sousbois on the finish.
Simon Field MW, BBR Buyer, January 2012

The increasing recognition of Vernay’s red wines underlines the reputation of this the most famous of all Condrieu producers, and reinforces the view that Christine is one of the most gifted wine-makers in the region. It is the whites, of course, which have forged this reputation. Their complexity and wonderful length re-affirms Vernay’s supremacy, and 2010, which they see as classic in the vein of 2007 and 2006, is a superb show-case for their gifts.
