2010 Ostler Pinot Noir, Caroline's, Waitaki River, Otago

Ostler Pinot Noir, Caroline's, Waitaki River, Otago
This cool-climate, east New-Zealand coast wine estate is underpinned by a streak of pure limestone rock, giving the wine a Côte de Beaune feel, yet accompanied by some charmingly complex notes of red currants and raspberry confit over underbrush, dried bay leaves and spices. In the mouth, it has crisp acidity, silky tannins and mineral persistence. This is wonderful and very game friendly.

Cool spring weather led to small fruit set and tiny berries again, but no problems later in the year and a warm finish to the season, picking from 28th April. Relatively dense colour, purple red. Heavenly, heady Pinot, a touch floral but with generosity behind. The 2010 combines the elegance of 2008 with some of the power of 2009. The best yet? A touch of oak showing in its youth, a few tannins, acidity again perfectly integrated. Very fine long finish, with plenty to give. 5 years for best results?
