Description

The 2010 Ostler Pinot Gris has intense freshness on the nose more than many Pinot Gris; fresh pineapple, pear aromas oozing from the glass. The palate is supple and introducing more pear, elderflower, clementine flavours and a touch of jasmine on the finish. Delicious and harmonious wine. This is a fine example of Pinot Gris.

This shows the best balance of the Ostler bottlings of Pinot Gris in 2010, as the site does not develop too much alcohol. The wine this year is soft and supple yet also spicy, with a little vein of acidity keeping it fresh. 13.5% alcohol provides the perfect balance.

David Williams
In pinot grigio (Italian for pinot gris) mode, this grape variety tends to be anonymously light and dry. When allowed to fully ripen and carry a bit of extra weight and sugar in Alsace or New Zealand, it's transformed into something much richer and more attractive, shimmering with quince and spice.

Ostler is in the newest Kiwi wine region, Waitaki Valley, which borders North Otago and Canterbury. On the limits of cool climate viticulture, vines were first planted here in 2001 and now this river valley is producing exciting pinot noir, riesling and pinot gris from Ostler Vineyard. My favourite is its fresh, concentrated, grapefruit and lime flavoured.

About this WINE

Pinot Gris/Pinot Grigio

Pinot Gris/Pinot Grigio

A first class grape variety grown in Alsace, where it is known as Tokay Pinot Gris, and in Italy, where it is called Pinot Grigio. In Alsace it is best suited to the deep, clay rich soils found in the north of the region where it produces richly honeyed, dry whites as well as superb sweet late harvest wines. At its best it combines the heady perfume and rich aroma of Gewürztraminer with the acidity one associates with Riesling. It ages very well, developing rich buttery characteristics.

In Northern Italy Pinot Grigio produces many thin undistinguished dry whites. However it comes into its own in Friuli-Venezia and the Alto Adige, where leading producers such as Alvaro Pecorari of Lis Neris produce marvellously rounded, elegant, and mineral laden examples. Pinot Gris is now grown with notable success in Oregon in the USA and in New Zealand.
