2010 Le Sec de Rayne Vigneau, Bordeaux

Le Sec de Rayne Vigneau, Bordeaux
Chateau Rayne Vigneau is a First-Growth Sauternes wine estate, superbly situated adjacent to Yquem with Rabaud Promis and Sigalas Rabaud to the immediate north of it. After years in the doldrums the estate was revitalised from 1971 onwards when it was purchased by the Bordeaux negociant firm Mestrezat. A recent innovation is the production of a dry white wine, made exclusively from Sauvignon Blanc.

We are seeing this as a trend which is gathering pace with top Sauternes chateaux, as more and more use the ripe grapes which have not been infected with the much-desired noble rot fungus to produce a full-flavoured dry white wine. At Rayne Vigneau then wine is vinified entirely in tank, with fine lees held in suspension in the wine to enhance the richness of texture and flavour.

Le Sec de Rayne Vigneau, Bordeaux
Like many Sauternes chateaux, Rayne Vigneau recently introduced a dry white wine made from its Sauvignon Blanc grapes and a useful vehicle for any of the grapes that do not develop the prized noble rot, vital for the sweet wines of Sauternes. It's a stylish, musk-scented and beguilling dry white Bordeaux with lots of waxy, white peach, lemon zest and lime spice on the palate. Drink as as aperitif or with rich, herby fish or white meat dishes.
