2009 Ch. Thénac Rouge, Bergerac

Ch. Thenac Rouge, Bergerac
Every once in a while a Château emerges in a less fashionable wine-producing area that punches well above the standards of that particular area. This is the case with Château Thénac from Bergerac. Situated in beautiful countryside south of Bergerac itself, and owned by Russian billionaire Eugene Shvidler, this 22 hectare vineyard is planted on a clay/limestone terroir on a south-facing slope, allowing for maximum exposure to the sun. With the average aged vines of 30 years, Thénac wines have good complexity and structure and offer a refreshing alternative from Bergerac's more illustrious neighbours in Bordeaux.

For the red wines the vinification is standard in that the grapes are fermented in stainless steel tanks after which the wine spends 15 months in a combination of oak barrels and vats before bottling.

The 2009 Chateau Thenac demonstrates the capacity of  Bergerac to make very attractive Bordeaux blends at affordable prices. 58% Merlot, 20% Malbec 12% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Cabernet FrancChâteau Thenac
