2009 Chianti Classico, Bibbiano, Castellina-in-Chianti

Chianti Classico, Bibbiano, Castellina-in-Chianti
Backed by a fabulous (2009) vintage, the beautifully elegant Chianti Classico of the noble Marrocchesi Marzi family at Bibbiano continues to woo a new generation of fine wine lovers. This estate, along with Badia a Coltibuono, proves that the traditional, pale-skinned, ribes fruited expression of Chianti Classico is the way forward: such is its feminine charm, pretty fruit character, and scintillating acidity.

There’s none of that juice concentration, micro-oxidation or use of international varieties here: just wonderful Sangiovese fruit grown like nowhere else in the world: on the limestone soils of Castellina-in-Chianti, and vinified in time-honoured fashion fashion. The attention to detail shown by present owners and brothers Tommaso and Ferderico Marzi represents a poignant final ‘addio’ to Giulio Gambelli, their spiritual guru since 1942, who passed on to pastures new this year. Drinking now but will keep/improve. Great with lamb or ham.

Chianti Classico, Bibbiano, Castellina-in-Chianti
What an easy, soft and plummy-fruited Chianti Classico this is. Pale in colour and delicate in pomegranate and cherry aromas. There's a juicy jammy quality to the palate that we find very appealing without necessarily being hugely complex.
