2011 Avaniel, Bodegas Monteabellón

Avaniel, Bodegas Monteabellon
Bodegas Monteabellón is located in the heart of Ribera del Duero and is made up 52 hectares of vineyards (mainly Tempranillo) around the township of Nava de Roa. The inspiration behind this relatively new venture is Isaac Fernandez, nephew of the legendary Vega Sicilia ex- winemaker, Marino Garcia, with whom he has worked for several vintages.

Clearly the aptitude for winemaking is hereditary here, although the Monteabellón style is richer and more approachable and forthright in youth, informed as it is by the generous use of barrels, although, admittedly, not in this case…..

This unoaked Joven wine is made from 100% Tempranillo and has good weight and plenty of savoury character to underpin the spicy black fruit. Hints of licorice, bay and chocolate complete the picture pleasingly and belie the wine’s nominal standing as the most junior member of this dynamic family.

Avaniel, Bodegas Monteabellon
Warm, sweet, open blackberry and plum nose is ripe and sleek. The palate is fresh, pure and silky textured with lovely ripe cherry and blackberry fruit. Very stylish. Some jammy notes, but overall it stays fresh. 91/100
