2011 Domaine la Salette, Côtes de Gascogne Blanc

Domaine la Salette, Cotes de Gascogne Blanc
Current owner Michel Duffour established the Domaine in 1982 and was joined by his son Nicolas in 2005. They specialize in local varietals Gros Manseng, Tannat, Colombard and Ugni Blanc, the last of which is also used for the production of Armagnac.

The 2011 wine is a wonderfully typical example, its blend made up of 80% old vine (80 years old) Colombard, with the balance divided between Gros Manseng and Ugni Blanc. The wine is pale gold with green hints and has a classic Gascon nose with citric notes and hints of slate and sour honey; the palate is crisp, lively and refreshing. Perfect, it goes without saying, with sea-food.

At under £10, 2011 Domaine La Salette, Côtes de Gascogne Blanc, £7.95, showed an exotic fragrance with a twist of citrusy fruitiness.

Who said Colombard can't be charming?  Down here in the southwest of France, Colombard, when blended with Gros Manseng and Ugni Blanc, as we have here, can make a more-ishly fresh and grapeful crisp white wine with added texture, Think weighty Saubignon Blanc.
