2009 Aglianico del Vulture, Pian del Moro, Basilicata, Musto Carmelitano

Aglianico del Vulture, Pian del Moro, Basilicata, Musto Carmelitano
Compared to the vertical lift-off achieved by the ‘Serra del Prete’ wine, ‘Pian del Moro’ is a very different and more traditional expression of Agianico del Vulture. It seems darker in colour, with dense damson, kirsch and even sloe gin aromas that surely derive from older vines, a warmer lava site and 12 months spent in used French barrels. As ever, the palate is laced with cleansing acidity which complements the full, yet compact, juicy, blackcurrant and chocolate fig fruit. This is very pure and very good, but it needs more time.

Impenetrable ruby. Leafy, lifted and a touch of browning apple that I associate with (overly long) barrel ageing. More elegant on the palate, but with drying tannins that seem a little green, making it a little bit tough at the moment to taste.

"Sour cherry and chocolate" on the nose and a "volcanic explosiveness on the palate."
