About this WINE
Bodegas Virgen del Aguila
Within the ancient kingdom of Aragon, Cariñena was the second of Spain’s wine regions to receive Denomination of Origin. Its tradition of wine production dates back to Phoenician and Roman times.
The region took its name from Carae, a Roman settlement from the year 50 BC, whilst the variety Cariñena (Carignan) originates from this region. This impressive bodega farms around 2500 ha, with approximate production of 15 million kilos per year. The vineyards are located in the south of Cariñena, in a privileged area at the foot of the Sistema Ibérico.
These are the highest vineyards in the area, at 850 metres above sea level, bringing very cool temperatures in summer. This clever blend is a marriage of the local Viura grape, itself famous in nearby Rioja when made as an age-worthy white wine, and international globe-trotter Chardonnay. No oak, just a bright and happy glass of wine. The wine takes its brand from the golden eagles (águila real) which soar across this rugged landscape.
Viura
Viura is a synonym for Macabeo and is the most widely planted white grape variety in Rioja. It is a fairly straightforward grape to cultivate, although it is susceptible to disease and in particular to downy mildew and grey rot. It is a generous-yielding grape and in Rioja it tends to be blended with approximately 5% Malvasia to produce classic white Riojas. In Rioja Alvesa it is often blended with Tempranillo to produce high quality Red Riojas.
In the wrong hands, Viura can produce rather neutral tasting wines. However skilled winemakers manage to preserve the grape`s natural aromatic freshness and produce wines that are enhanced by oak maturation rather than overwhelmed. Marqués de Cáceres and Herencia Remondo are widely recognised as two of the finest exponents of Viura in Rioja.

Balanced acidity and a softly textured mouthfeel. Spring blossom on the palate accompanies peach and apricot with some pear too on the long, clean, citrus-led finish. Perfect as a light aperitif, this is fresh enough to match to fruit salads too. Serve at a cool 11C to enhance the crisp feel.
