2008 Inglenook, CASK Cabernet, Rutherford, Napa Valley

Inglenook, CASK Cabernet, Rutherford, Napa Valley
100% Cabernet Sauvignon - The raison d’etre of this wine is to highlight the excellence of fruit from the Rutherford sub-district of the Napa Valley, and to reflect in style the type of outstanding wines produced by former owner John Daniel in the 1940s, when Inglenook wines enjoyed legendary status in California. In terms of vinification, a traditional path is followed, with grapes hand-sorted before being barrel-fermented in French oak barriques. The grapes were allowed to macerate for 21 days to enhance the richness of the must before being aged in a combination of French and American oak, new and used, for 16 months .

The growing season in 2008 was characterised by a dry winter and a spring frost, which reduced the size of the crop but imbued the grapes with significant concentration. A warm summer created perfect ripeness and the result is a wine of great density, hugely concentrated but by no means lacking in finesse and bearing the signature elegance of the Rutherford district. Can be drunk now but will last for 20 more years.
