2008 Berrys' Barolo, Fratelli Alessandria, Piedmont

Berrys' Barolo, Fratelli Alessandria, Piedmont
This beautiful yet traditional Barolo is the first offering from Berrys' own label Italian range. Fratelli Alessandria is based in the hilltop village of Verduno and with just 14 hectares of vines, the family-owned winery prides itself on sculpting its wines. I loved this Barolo with bold, beefy, smoky truffley fruit and a long savoury, beef tea finish. Perfect with a rich game stew or pie.
Jane MacQuitty - 50 Best Reds - The Times - 01-Dec-2012

This is Berrys’ first ever Own Selection Barolo; recognising the high quality now being made in Piedmont, and across Italy generally. Traditionally made by the Alessandria family, in their historic cantina based in the village of Verduno, this 100% Nebbiolo benefits from the calcareous clay soils of the Langhe hills and long ageing in large slavonian oak to give a perfumed, elegantly suave, yet full, red berried and licorice flavoured wine with gentle tannins to be enjoyed now with game or fowl, and over the next decade.

Berrys' Barolo, Fratelli Alessandria, Piedmont
Spending the same amount on wine and food is sensible,so one doesn't overwhelm the other. Occasionally, though, it's good to splash out, and this smoky, truffley, walk-in-the-woods barolo cries out for a wintry pasta.

Berrys' Barolo, Fratelli Alessandria, Piedmont
Barolo is famously tough and tannic when it's young, but this example from posh merchant Berry Bros. very superior own-label range was already quite silky when I tasted it in situ last year, although it has stuffing enough to add to its ethereal rose fragrance for five to ten years.
