Domaine Montcalmes is one of the new generations of superstars from the Languedoc and one of several hitherto unknown properties which have identified Les Terrasses du Larzac as the most outstanding terroir in the region. The 2009 vintage was excellent in this part of the world and the Montcalmes is a worthy representative of a new wave of Southern Belle, elegant and urbane, blessed with natural beauty and, now, the benefit of an expensive education .More Roedean than Scarlett O’Hara all in all.

The blend is 60% Syrah, and 20% of Grenache and Mourvèdre. The palate has an attractive sweet and sour interface and very refined tannins courtesy of 24 months in barrels of one or two years of age. The subtle hints of the garrigue add to the attraction, which is long-limbed and somewhat beguiling.

The final blend of Frédéric Pourtalié's vaious parcels contains 60% Syrah and 20% each Grenache and Mourvèdre. The wine exhibits the ripe, warm nature of the vintage with a compote-fruit nose and sweet, generous attack but then freshness and length on the finish.
