Description

Nowhere is Verdejo more at home than in the north-west Denominacion of Rueda, sandwiched between the old cities of Valladolid, Segovia and Avila.

Historically one of the great grapes of Spain, the Verdejo fell a little from grace when it came to be reasised that its wines oxidised too quickly, thereby loosing poise and freshness. Modern winemaking has addressed this comprehensively and the best examples, such as this elegantly packaged wine from Monteabellón, are both perfectly poised and perfectly fresh!

And, most importantly, the wine has lost none of the rich, peachy character for which this variety is well known. The 2011 seems to bridge the stylistic gap between the citric and the tropical ends of the spectrum with great ease, capturing the best qualities of both.

About this WINE

Bodegas Monteabellon

Bodegas Monteabellon

Bodegas Monteabellón is located in the heart of Ribera del Duero and is made up 52 hectares of vineyards (mainly Tempranillo) around the township of Nava de Roa.

The inspiration behind this relatively new venture is Isaac Fernandez, nephew of the legendary Vega Sicilia ex- winemaker, Marino Garcia, with whom he has worked for several vintages.

Clearly the aptitude for winemaking is hereditary here, although the Monteabellón style is richer and more approachable and forthright in youth, informed as it is by the generous use of barrels, sourced in both France and America. A very stylish wine range, all offering terrific value.

Verdejo

Verdejo

One of Spain's higher quality white grape varieties which languished in obscurity for several hundred years before being rediscovered 15 years ago. It is a native grape of Rueda in North-west Spain and is now its principal white grape variety. It is most successfully cultivated in high altitude vineyards where the soils are calcareous and well drained.

Previously Verdejo-based wines were worryingly prone to premature oxidation. However techniques including night-time harvesting, cool fermentation and the use of an inert gas blanketing have led to the delicate and youthful aromatic freshness of the wines being preserved. It is often blended with Sauvignon Blanc to add body and richness to Sauvignon's aromatic lift. Its finest manifestation is Rueda Superior, which must contain a minimum of 85% Verdejo.

Typically Verdejo dominated wines are crisp with soft, creamy, nutty overtones, and sometimes accompanied by notes of honey. Arguably Spain's finest white grape variety.
