Description

Bierzo is a land of grapes and wine, a vineyard-covered region steeped in gastronomic, historic and viticultural tradition. The soil is composed of quartz and slate which, combined with a mild and humid climate, allow for optimum grape-growing.

The Godello grape variety, as with Albariño before it, is taking the wine-loving world by storm & examples such as this one from Alvarez de Toledo are a fine point of reference when charting what has been a stratospheric rise to fame.

The harvest was by hand and took place at the end of September. The subsequent wine is fruity and persistent on the nose; it has well integrated but lively acidity on the palate, combined with a strong core of fruit – a very refreshing and easy-drinking wine.

Godello became almost extinct in the 1970s, but was rescued by a few quality-conscious producers and today sees a real revival. Álvarez de Toledo produces a golden-coloured Godello, with a palate that combines fresh zesty citrus fruit with a touch of sleek exotic pineapple and chalky minerality on the finish. Definitely my pick as I like to explore unusual grape varieties and it is superb with food. It is a great alternative to Chablis as it is delicious by itself and terrific with seafood (especially scallops).

Bodegas Alvarez de Toledo

Bodegas Alvarez de Toledo

The beautiful and mountainous wine region of Bierzo is high in north-west Spain. Riven with valleys, its climate is warm yet generous. The Álvarez de Toledo family goes back many centuries, the first notable moment being in 1472 when the Count Don Garciá Álvarez de Toledo was granted the title of Duke of Alba by Henry IV of Castile. Three decades later, in 1514, his grandson Pedro Álvarez de Toledo y Zuñiga, who later became Viceroy of Naples, married the daughter of the Marquis of Villafranca del Bierzo in the town of Ponferrada, thus linking the Álvarez de Toledo family to the region of El Bierzo, a line which continues to this day.

They make wines from the Godello grape, one of the stand-out indigenous Iberian white grape varieties that has really benefitted from the control that modern winemaking offers and is now enjoying a resurgence in both production and popularity. Some modern examples can be oaked, but this example is a wellcomposed, gently perfumed and discretely almond-infused wine.

Godello

Godello is a white grape variety primarily found in northwest Spain and northern Portugal. The grape is capable of producing very fine white wines, and it is in the Valdeorras region that its greatest successes are seen, leading to a steady increase in plantings there. Bodegas Rafael Palacios (managed by the brother of Spain’s leading winemaker Alvaro Palacios) has been the driving force behind the revival of the grape.

In Jancis Robinson MW words' "Godello combines the structure of white burgundy with the finesse of a juicily mineral grape".
