Description

Some way down the eastern seaboard of Spain and inland of Alicante is a little jewel of a wine region: Yecla. Protected by a ring of mountains, this is one of the few regions in Europe still able to grow ungrafted vines, so the plants here are old and of exceptional quality. The king here is Monastrell (the Spanish version of France’s Mourvèdre) and this is a strong, spicy, muscular wine, but given a creamy core by ageing in French oak for six months, and blending with 25% Syrah. This wine was born for red meats.

Wine Advocate92/100
One year older, the 2010 Barahonda Barrica is composed of 75% Monastrell and 25% Syrah aged in a combination of French and American oak for six months. A big, thick, juicy, dense purple-colored effort, it reveals lots of blackberry and cassis fruit intermixed with hints of camphor, licorice and spicy oak. This medium to full-bodied, luscious, fruity, crowd-pleaser should keep for 3-4 years.

Mourvèdre

Mourvèdre

Mourvèdre, aka Monastrell in Spain, is a common blending partner of Syrah and Grenache (aka Garnacha in Spain). In Australia and California it can also appear under the name Mataro.

Mourvèdre's bastion in France is Bandol, where it reigns supreme in the red blends and yielding a savoury, gamey, herby wine. It also commonly features in Southern Rhône, Languedoc & Rousillon blends.

The grape needs a warm climate to ripen fully. Its stronghold in Spain are the appellations along the south-east Mediterranean(Murcia, Jumilla, Bullas), where it produces rosé, dry red and sweet fortified wines. Monastrell has played a significant part in Spain’s vinous heritage; it nurtures wines that are deep in colour and richly tannic, sometimes overbearing in their intensity and concentration
