Description

Gold Medal Winner, Spirits Business Rum Masters Competition 2014
Penny Blue is a truly unique offering in the world of aged rums - Named after the world’s rarest stamp, Penny Blue is distilled at the oldest operational distillery on the Island of Mauritius, Medine, dating back to 1926. The estate is situated a few meters from the sea on the western side of the island near Bambou. Penny Blue joins another Medine-distilled Mauritian rum Pink Pigeon.

Penny Blue is matured in Cognac, Bourbon and Whisky Casks - Each limited edition batch is hand selected by our Master Blenders, Doug McIvor from BBR and Jean Francois Koenig from Medine.

Appearance: Deep amber with golden highlights.
Nose: Soft citrus, delicate wood tannins, tropical fruits, orange blossom, rich espresso coffee notes, salted ham with cloves and honey glaze…
Palate: Beautifully balanced, smooth and complex with citrus, tropical fruits, nutty aromas with hints of vanilla.

The Penny Blue Stamp, printed in Mauritius in 1847, immediately became a collectors’ item because of its inscription: A mistake by the engraver resulted in it reading “Post Office” rather than the usual “Post Paid.” From the thousand stamps printed at the time, only twelve are believed to be in existence today. The Penny Blue stamp is as rare and highly collectable as this small batch rum.

Sometimes, rarely, the worlds of philatelly and rum collide. Penny Blue is no longer just the name of a famously rare postage stamp, It's also the name of a rare Mauritian Rum from from the Indian Ocean Rum Company and Berry Bros & Rudd.
This vatting of 14 casks comes from the west side of the island, at the oldest working distilery in Mauritius - established in 1926. The Rum is aged in both French and American casks.

About this SPIRIT

The Indian Ocean Rum Company

The Indian Ocean Rum Company

In the heart of the Medine Sugar Estate on the tropical island of Mauritius—the jewel of the Indian Ocean – lies the Medine Distillery which has been producing the finest Mauritian rums since 1926, making it the oldest working distillery on the island.

Named after one of the rarest birds in the world which flies free in the skies of Mauritius, The Pink Pigeon is a single-estate Rum made uniquely with the addition of Bourbon vanilla. This exceptional spice is hand-pollinated and hand-picked in the rainforest canopy of Madagascar and the rich volcanic soil of Réunion.

The natural vanilla combined with the exotic flavours of orange peel and orchid flowers make this rum as exquisite and rare as the Pink Pigeon bird itself. The rum’s rich and creamy mouthfeel makes it ideal for luxurious cocktails and revisited classics such as Daiquiris and Mojitos.

Named after the rarest stamp in the world and produced by the Medine Distillery in Mauritius, Penny Blue is a limited edition XO rum which has been matured in Cognac, Whisky and Bourbon casks.

Created in small batches, each one with its own personality, the rum is bottled on the estate and is, by definition, rare and finite. Penny Blue is always natural in colour and is not chill-filtered in order to preserve the heart of the rum.
