2011 Ramos Pinto

Ramos Pinto
The three Ramos Pinto Quintas which have provided the fruit for this outstanding wine are Ervamoira in the Upper Douro and Bon Retiro and Urtiga in the Cima Corgo. Founded in 1880 and still in family ownership, the property’s well-named winemaker Ana Rosas praises the aromatic harmony and tannic integrity of the young wine, features which will ensure a more than satisfactorily evolution over the medium term and beyond. Forest floor and black cherry notes cede to a firm, slightly earthy mid-palate and a broad, gently smoky finish. General Manager João Nicolau de Almeida attributes the spicy complexity of the young wine to the addition of the varieties Tinta da Barca and Sousão to the blend for the first time.

Rated 4 out of 5 by Delicious in a decade? I decanted this on Christmas Eve 2013 in anticipation of the next day's celebrations. A sneaky preemptive tasting revealed some very green tannins, with a strong undertone of delicious fruits. On the big day itself, things had improved a bit - it is a very dark wine indeed, with a great potency of fruit, alcohol and sweetness to match, but with plenty of scope for this wine to soften further. This is a delicious port at a competetive price compared to the Warres and Dows of this world. My curiosity got the better of me (by at least 5, if not 10 years) and I think there is something very tasty waiting for me down the line. I can't wait to try the aforementioned "bigger" producers - all the enthusiasthic comment about 2011's port vintage would appear to be true. 07 January 2014
