Description

Wine-making pioneer Telmo Rodriguez is a relatively new addition to our portfolio but in this everchanging and diversifying market- place, we are incredibly happy to be on the zeitgeist (albeit vicariously) of the Spanish wine-making revolution, which is sweeping through some of the country’s lesser known but up and coming regions, such as Bierzo. Alicante has a world-wide reputation for sun and sand, however this wine may well spark a spate of oenophiles touching down in the vicinity, in order to sample the region’s vinous offerings.

The grape variety is Monastrell or Mourvedre for the French-minded among us, from bush-trained vines planted on a terroir of sand and loam. Harvest is by hand and fermentation takes place in stainless steel and concrete, with indigenous yeasts from the cellar providing the catalyst for fermentation. The nose is deep and swarthy with rich blackcurrant and forest floor, however the palate is elegant and balanced, the acidity acting as a perfect foil for the ripe fruit. The icing on the cake is a lengthy finish which lingers on the palate in a very pleasing way.

David Williams
Mourvèdre is the least heralded of the three grape varieties that make up the classic Rhône valley-inspired GSM blend. But when it's made on its own (or as the dominant part of the blend) in various locations along the Mediterranean, it can be every bit as darkly interesting as syrah, and more appealing than the sometimes overwhelmingly fulsome fruit and high alcohol of grenache. For sheer value, head to the grape's origins in southeast Spain, where it's known as monastrell, and where peripatetic winemaker Telmo Rodriguez has made this exuberant example, with its swoosh of fresh inky black fruit. About this WINE

Telmo Rodriguez

Telmo Rodriguez

Telmo Rodriguez is one of the great Spanish winemakers. He travelled and learnt for many years before returning home to Rioja. In addition, he supervises négociant projects throughout Spain. One of his most acclaimed projects is in Ribera del Duero.

The charismatic Telmo has something of the prodigal about him, having now returned to his Riojan homestead to energise the great house of Remelluri. One should not overlook, however, his other properties, which explore some of the lesser-known areas of Spain and in each case seek to make superlative and characterful wines. Ribera del Duero is far from a lesser-known area, so it is to Telmo’s great credit, but to no-one’s surprise, that the wines he makes at Matallana are amongst the very best here too.
