Description

This classic example of the ever-popular Albariño variety comes from a 70 hectare parcel of vines surrounding the winery. The nose is typically fresh with a hint of salinity lending the wine a definite sense of place. There are notes of pineapple, apple and of course lemon zest but the overwhelming impression is of energy and vivaciousness, a benchmark wine to be enjoyed with fish and/or white meat.
Nicholas Stewart, Buying Department

I opened this with a plethora of the Berry Bros. & Rudd Fine Wine Team, straight after the obligatory No.3 and T and this was a superb way to lead our way in to a sunny Saturday afternoon. It has a beautiful weight to it, an inherent richness but with so much fresh acidity it is very light on its feet as well. Peach fruit predominates with a touch of lemon and the tiniest hint of green apple.

Bodegas Fillaboa

Bodegas Fillaboa

Fillaboa, which means “good daughter” in Galician, is the biggest estate on the Property Register of Pontevedra and one of the oldest in Galicia. Due to it’s border location in the municipality of Salvaterra de Miño, it caused continuous disputes between Portugal and Spain, until it was finally recovered by the Spanish Crown, after the last Portuguese occupation in the 18th century.

Fillaboa' vineyards are planted exclusively with the Albariño varietal. The Albariño grape is the native Galician varietal par excellence, however, legend tells that in reality it was the Benedictine Monks of Cluny, famous for their important contribution to the expansion of gothic art in Europe, who brought the grape to Galicia in the 12th century. In this Atlantic region, the order came upon the ideal conditions for growing the varietal, known today as Albariño, which they had brought from far away central European lands on the banks of the Rhin. Whatever the real story is, the Albariño vines and the wines they produce are a documented fact in Galicia since the Middle Ages, and today the Albariño grape is considered native of Galicia and it’s wines are emblematic of the rich gastronomic patrimony of the region.

Albariño

Albariño

Albariño is one of the most distinctive white wine grapes in Spain. Its heartlands are in Galacia, in Spain's rain- sodden north-west, and in Portugal`s Vinho Verde region, where it is known as Alvarinho and Cainho Branco. In the past, it was commonly mixed with other local grapes such as Loureiro, Godello, Caiño, Arinto or Treixadura to produce blended wines, but since the mid 1980s the grape's full potential has been realised and appreciated for single varietal bottlings.

Its thick skin enables it to withstand the damp climate of Galicia and the subsequent fruit is small, sweet and high in glycerol, producing wines high in alcohol and acidity.

High quality Albariño dominated wines are intensely aromatic and redolent of peaches, apricots and almonds on the palate. They have the ability to age gracefully and many growers are now experimenting with oak maturation. The finest Albariño wines come from the Rias Baixas DOC of Galicia. Albariño is also produced in California wine regions including the Santa Ynez Valley & Los Carneros AVAs.
