The Chivite’s contribution to the burgeoning Pago movement is a significant one, not least because of the extraordinary quality of the wine, which we are confident to describe as the finest in Navarra. The single vineyard concept eschews the humble minutiae of provenance and puts forward the wine as an autonomous package to prosper or fall on its own merits. Being from 2004 has certainly helped in this instance, and this blend of 65% Tempranillo and 35% Merlot has been brought up for 14 months in French oak, 60% of which is new. Aromas of oriental ink and myrtle are matched on the palate by sloes, morello cherry and nutmeg; the tannins are finely judged and the crescendo on the finish betrays pedigree. One of the world’s few producers who pre-date the establishment of Berry Bros. & Rudd, Bodegas Chivite have been producing wine through 11 generations. This most historic of estates has become one of Spain’s most important and highly respected producers. This reputation was furthered in 1967 when Julián Chivite became a founder member of the Regulatory Council of the Denominación de Origen Navarra, and is built upon a peerless understanding of the local terroir and its affinity to a panoply of international grape varieties. Chivite continue to produce wonderful, age-worthy wines which are tremendously popular around the world, often where one sees their reputation precede them.
