Description

A recent conference of Sommeliers voted Grüner Veltliner the most food friendly grape variety in the world, and one can readily see why – the natural texture and spiciness of this native Austrian grape make it a perfect partner for a wide range of cuisines, from traditional North European, via Mediterranean to Thai or Szechuan.  It also has the advantage of being delicious on its own, as its vibrant  apple and rocket salad character and medium body, usually untrammelled by oak, make it eminently drinkable.

This example is from a producer with a long history of being at the forefront of viticultural and winemaking advance in a country that has the strictest wine quality laws in the world.  I regularly visit Austria, and even during the depths of winter always look forward to my first glass of “gruvee”.

Finely detailed with delicate, floral and white pepper/stone aromas, there’s a broad, soft, pulpy undercarriage, with salty/sweet, white peach stone flavours that echo those of Sarotto’s Bric Sassi Gavi di Gavi. Very pure, generous, with a distinctly sapid finish; one that cries out for a sea fish platter.

About this WINE

Josef Ehmoser

Josef Ehmoser

The Josef Ehmoser winery is located in Tiefenthal in the community of Grossweikersdorf, 30 kilometres east of Krems and 45 kilometres west of Vienna. Here the third generation vintner Josef Ehmoser and his wife Martina are enriching the well known Austrian winegrowing region of Wagram. Five aspects make the wines from the Ehmoser Winery distinctive: the climate, the soil, the location, the varieties and the vintner himself.

The Wagram produces "wines with terroir" and the loess soil unique to Europe plays an important role. On a base of primitive rock lies marine sediments and clay on which the loess reaches up to twelve meters high. Vineyard terraces are found on this deep soil. Loess is especially fertile, has a lime concentration of up to 30 percent, and optimally stores water.

The vineyards of the Josef Ehmoser Winery are located in Tiefenthal on the left bank of the Danube, somewhat removed from the river, between Grafenegg in the west and Heldenberg in the east. The vineyards grow to their perfect natural maturation on the sloping sites south of the Danube such as Hohenberg (deep loess), Steinberg (loess with sand) and Georgenberg (deep loess).

Their philosophy is to "respect nature" and this attitude is also reflected in their wines. In order to preserve the power of nature in wine-growing intervention is as little as possible and but as much as necessary on the natural landscape. They say "we are mere observers with respect to these elements. It is only in harmony with nature that the true character of our wines thrives. The grapes achieve harmonious ripeness through respect for the processes and conditions and through understanding our wines.... we also apply this philosophy in our work in the wine cellar. We support the potential of our wines, stressing their personality without forcing them on a prescribed path. Thus the power of nature remains fully intact."

Grüner Veltliner

Grüner Veltliner

Grüner Veltliner is Austria's most famous grape variety. It is indigenous to Austria and is grown extensively in every Austrian wine region with the exception of Steiermark. It constitutes 36% of all vineyard plantings with the best wines coming from the north-east of the country, particularly regions such as the Wachau, Kamptal and Kremstal which border the Danube river.

Grüner Veltliner is a late ripening variety that typically produces wines that are pale green in colour and display fruit notes of grapefruits, limes, pears, and sometimes hints of white pepper. They normally possess a steely backbone of acidity which enables the best bottles to age gracefully. The grape's natural acidity accompanied by its restrained and understated fruit characters makes its wines ideal partners for food. A marvellous alternative to the more mainstream white grape varieties.
