Description

Aultmore distillery, founded in 1896, lies to the north of Keith in Banffshire. The name is gaelic for “Great Burn”, a reference to the Auchinderran burn which provides some of the distillery’s water. In its early years Aultmore produced sporadically although it has long been classed as a top blending malt.

The nose offers fruity, grassy notes with glorious honeyed depths. The palate gives some buttery and toasty notes and builds well to deliver a malty, creamy texture with bright flavours reminiscent of melon and apple skin.

Aultmore Distillery

Aultmore Distillery

The Aultmore Distillery lies several miles north of the town of Keith on the eastern fringe of Speyside. It was founded in 1895 by Alexander Edward, son of David Edward and owner of Benrinnes. Alexander Edward was an important figure in the whisky scene; his ventures include Craigellachie and Oban distilleries.

The financial crisis in the whisky industry during Prohibition in the US forced the sale of Oban and Aultmore to new owners, John Dewar and Sons, in 1923. The distillery was renovated in 1970 and doubled its production to four stills.

Most of the production is used in blends like William Lawson’s Finest and Dewar’s. In fact, Aultmore single Malt wasn’t promoted until 2014 and is still relatively small as a proportion of production. The signature style shows a honeyed and toasty vanilla oak character, with 12-year-old, 18-year-old and 21-year-old bottlings and a 25-year-old and Exceptional Casks.
