Description

Domenic Torzi is of South-Central Italian origin, a heritage reflected in some of the grape varieties he grows and the “Amarone” treatment he gives to his Frost Dodger Shiraz. With his partner Tracy Matthews, he has set up home since 1996 on 10 hectares of land in the high Eden Valley, a cool region in South Australia more famous for Riesling than Negroamaro or Shiraz. Not only do they make great, characterful wines, but they also make fabulous olive oil from some of the ancient wild olive trees in the Barossa Valley, and if you are lucky enough to visit they may treat you to some of their beautiful home-cured ham and fresh bread.

This is a remarkable Eden Valley Shiraz made from semi-dried grapes that has a corresponding Amarone character married to classic Australian black fruits and ripe tannins.

Wine Advocate87/100
Deep garnet-purple in color and profoundly scented of creme de cassis, mint fondant and dark chocolate with a hint of thyme, the full-bodied 2012 Frost Dodger Shiraz gives tons of minted, black fruit flavors in the mouth shaped by a medium level of chewy tannins and good backbone of uplifting acidity. It finishes long with a savory, vegetal edge. Drink it now to 2018.

Syrah/Shiraz

Syrah/Shiraz

A noble black grape variety grown particularly in the Northern Rhône where it produces the great red wines of Hermitage, Cote Rôtie and Cornas, and in Australia where it produces wines of startling depth and intensity. Reasonably low yields are a crucial factor for quality as is picking at optimum ripeness. Its heartland, Hermitage and Côte Rôtie, consists of 270 hectares of steeply terraced vineyards producing wines that brim with pepper, spices, tar and black treacle when young. After 5-10 years they become smooth and velvety with pronounced fruit characteristics of damsons, raspberries, blackcurrants and loganberries.

It is now grown extensively in the Southern Rhône where it is blended with Grenache and Mourvèdre to produce the great red wines of Châteauneuf du Pape and Gigondas amongst others. Its spiritual home in Australia is the Barossa Valley, where there are plantings dating as far back as 1860. Australian Shiraz tends to be sweeter than its Northern Rhône counterpart and the best examples are redolent of new leather, dark chocolate, liquorice, and prunes and display a blackcurrant lusciousness.

South African producers such as Eben Sadie are now producing world- class Shiraz wines that represent astonishing value for money.
