The 2013 Gavi di Gavi, Bric Sassi, Roberto Sarotto from Piedmont in northwest Italy is an old favourite of David Berry Green, Berrys’ Italian wine buyer, and I can quite see why. Made from hand-picked, whole-bunch-pressed, unblended Cortese from the highest part (‘bric’) of a stony (‘sassi’) single vineyard, it is vibrantly fresh with lots of peachy, baked apple, stewed pear fruit alongside the rather zingier notes of lemon ’n’ lime. It’s also exceptional value.

About this WINE
Cortese
This white grape produces wines in the appellations of Cortese dell'Alto Monferrato, Colli Tortonesi as well as the DOCG wine of Gavi di Gavi. Cortese is a native grape variety of Alessandria in Piedmont and tends to perform best in the hills between Novi and Tortona in Piedmont. The grape has been so successful in Gavi (which is located in the south of Piedmont close to Liguria) that it is known there as Cortese di Gavi.
Typically produces wines that are pale lemon-white in colour, possess a fine fragrance and are steely and dry on the palate. The best examples can develop an intense honeyed richness with medium term ageing.

Description
For this perennial Berry Bros. & Rudd favourite, 2013 was a cooler year than 2012, giving the Cortese a lime overtone, and an almost Riesling-like focus. On the palate, this light/medium bodied, dry wine boasts more dry extract than normal, giving white stone minerality that balances up the crunchy ripe lime, white fruit characters. Indeed it has the sort of sapidity you'd expect from the Loire.
