Description

Caperdonich was sometimes called Glen Grant number two distillery and closed shortly after being built in 1902. It remained silent for 65 years before being refitted in the 1960’s. Sadly the reprieve was not to last and the buildings were demolished quite recently.

The nose gives some apple and sugared pastry with hints of dried banana and honey on cereal. The palate gives some dusty hay barn impressions but with a nice overall fruitiness and a surprising burst of peat.

About this SPIRIT

Caperdonich Distillery, Speyside

Caperdonich Distillery, Speyside

Caperdonich is a partner to the renowned Glen Grant. The two distilleries, under the same ownership, are across the street from one another in the whisky town of Rothes.

Actually the distillery was originally founded in 1897 by Major James Grant under the name Glen Grant 2 Both distilleries were joined by a pipe-line, known as the whisky pipe by the inhabitants of Rothes. The legend says that some enterprising locals of Rothes made some holes in the pipe, in order to get their own part of the spirit.

Production ceased between 1901 and 1965, due to decreasing demand and the effect of the two World Wars and most of its equipment was moved across the road to Glen Grant for use as spares. It re-opened under the ownership of The Glenlivet and Glen Grant Distilleries Ltd.

In 2000 it was acquired by the French group Pernod-Ricard. When compared with its sister distillery Glen Grant, Caperdonich is perhaps a dash fruitier and slightly more smoky. They are both components of the Chivas Regal blend. As a single malt, Caperdonich is available only in independent bottlings, although this may change.

Speyside Whisky

Speyside Whisky

To some Speyside represents the jewel in whisky’s crown. Speyside is the home of legal whisky production and it’s best known examples. Around the world Glenlivet, Macallan, Glenfiddich, Glenrothes and Glenfarclas typify all that whisky, at it’s best has to offer. At it’s heart running from the Monadhliath mountains north to the sea, is the River Spey. It is the fastest flowing river in Britain, and also well known for its salmon fishing.

Speyside is the principal whisky-producing region: Speyside has within it some forty-six operating distilleries - over half the total number in the entire Scotland.

Speysides are essentially sweet whiskies. They have little peaty character They are typically highly perfumed, feminine and elegant.

The classical nature of Speyside’s malts means that a number of the finest malts are used almost exclusively for blending. It is the top Speysider’s that give good blends their ‘Top Dressing’.

Malts such as Mortlach, Glen Elgin, Strathmill and Benrinnes are rarely found as distillery bottlings, however when individual casks are tracked down by independent bottlers such as our Own Selection Single Malt Whiskies the resultant whisky can be quite wonderful.
