Description

Garnatxa (Grenache) leads the friendly assault on the senses here with Cariñena (Carignan), Syrah and Merlot lending strong support. Chalky soils on eponymous high ground have yielded a wine with crunchy fruit, and smoky balsamic elements courtesy of the year’s barrel ageing.

From Terra Alta again, this is 60% Grenache with Carignan, Syrah and Merlot. It spends a year in French oak, and weighs in with 14% alcohol. A whole spice cupboard of aromas open up, exotic and perfumed, with bloody and gamey notes too, a slick of ripe cassis and black cherry and lots of tobacco too. There's a helluva lot going on - a fair bit of it oak-derived at this stage, but it has a deep well of fruit too. In the mouth it is powerful and driven by a combination of fruit and oak-dominated flavours. It stays dry, and it is edged with a chicory bite of tannin and dark acidity, the spices building again, softened by a touch of chocolate and vanilla. Big, good and impressive, though for me a little less oak would improve it.
