About this WINE
Viura
Viura is a synonym for Macabeo and is the most widely planted white grape variety in Rioja. It is a fairly straightforward grape to cultivate, although it is susceptible to disease and in particular to downy mildew and grey rot. It is a generous-yielding grape and in Rioja it tends to be blended with approximately 5% Malvasia to produce classic white Riojas. In Rioja Alvesa it is often blended with Tempranillo to produce high quality Red Riojas.
In the wrong hands, Viura can produce rather neutral tasting wines. However skilled winemakers manage to preserve the grape`s natural aromatic freshness and produce wines that are enhanced by oak maturation rather than overwhelmed. Marqués de Cáceres and Herencia Remondo are widely recognised as two of the finest exponents of Viura in Rioja.

Description
The gregarious Miguel Angel Di Gregorio has always put a lot of effort into his white wine; in the way that some see white Hermitage as every bit as important as its red counterpart, he feels that white Rioja is a key part of Rioja's heritage and identity. Paradoxically, however, his method of expressing this is to make a modern style ,using new French oak of quite tight grained provenance.
With a blend divided between Viura ( 90%) and Malvasia ( 10%), the 2011 has been aged in barrique for 14 months and has attractive tropical notes on the nose, backed up by hints of guava, fennel and lemon grass. The palate is generously textured, but not too plump; its oak buttress discrete but solid. The finish is creamy and pleasingly indulgent ; a fine match for weightier fish, such as turbot or sea bream.
