Description

Your eyes are not deceiving you; this is indeed a New Zealand wine made from Arneis, that little-known Italian variety. As much as I love the weird and wonderful, we would not be listing this wine if it were not superb – and it is, superb.

The nose is full of fresh white peach and pink grapefruit, combining with the touch of almond that you would expect from Italian Arneis. The palate is pure, mineral and precise; it feels light and lively, dancing on the palate, but is medium-bodied with delicate yet concentrated fruit and good texture behind. Notes of pear, dried straw and lemon verbena creep through, complemented by more white peach and wet stone minerality on the long length. This is a lovely, lovely wine from Swiss genius in New Zealand, Hans Herzog.

Leafy, apple and apricot fruit. Real character here. Justifies its variety - depth, complexity and authenticity.

About this WINE

Hans Herzog

Hans Herzog

Herzog is a family owned New Zealand winery and restaurant, supported by a unique team of individuals who all share the same values: a passion for wine and food, commitment to excellence and quality, and a love for the great New Zealand environment.

As the name suggests, Hans Herzog's roots lie in Switzerland where the family has grown wine since 1630. There Hans and Therese owned the successful 'Taggenberg' vineyard and restaurant in the Zurich wine country.

Looking for a new challenge, in the mid-1990s they planted an 11 hectare vineyard bordering the Wairau River here in Marlborough and later moved the winery and Michelin-starred restaurant.

Here Hans has adopted an experimentalist stance, cultivating an eclectic array of varieties, including Arneis, Barbera, Tempranillo and Zweigelt - as well as the more traditional Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The organically-managed vineyard benefits from a warm, dry microclimate and Hans ferments at cool temperatures using wild yeasts, the white wines barrel-fermented in 500 litre oak puncheons, the reds aged for 12-30 months in French oak barriques, creating wines rich in varietal character.

The boutique estate and restaurant is now widely acclaimed as one of the best in New Zealand.

Arneis

Arneis

Arneis means "rascal" in Italian, and is so named for its ability to beguile the most patient winemakers. It is a  delicate white wine grape that originated (and is still primarily grown) in the Roero hills of Italy's southern Piedmont, just north of Alba ; it thrives in the chalky and sandy soil of this region.

Once nearly extinct, Arneis has made a comeback in recent years. The Arneis de Roero wines received DOC status in 1989 and DOCG in 2006 and production is on the rise, as consumers have come to appreciate its its distinctive apricot and tangerine aromas.

It can produce very good wines with perfumy characteristics of apples, pears, and a hint of licorice. The wines, usually sold as Roero Arneis DOCG.
