Description

Recommended by Tom Cannavan, wine-pages.com, Nov 2015
This is a South African Chenin in the barrel-fermented, ripe and honeyed style, with its 14% alcohol it is powerful, immediately so on the nose with toast and toffee apple, a squeeze of lemon and buttery sense of weight and richness. In the mouth it is  full-flavoured and full-textured, with a hint of exotic fruit ripeness and sweetness, then the creamy almond quality of the oak fills in beneath whilst the fresh acidity propels the finish. Just delicious, ready to drink, but should also cellar for a few years.

About this WINE

Foxwood Vineyards

Foxwood Vineyards

Twelfth generation South African winemaker, Matthew Krone, set up Foxwood Vineyards in partnership with Pieter de Vos and Jan Groenewald. This resurrected an old business alliance as Matthew’s great-grandfather and Pieter’s grandfather were also partners in the successful company, DeVosKrone&Co, in 1923. They had decided that it was once again time for the two families to join forces and ‘bring a little bit of history back to life’.

Matthew learnt his craft under the tutelage of his late grandfather and father, both lauded forerunners in the South African wine industry, pioneering practices and techniques that influenced winemaking not only in their own country, but also further afield. Their passion and integrity are key to the philosophy by which he operates today.

Chenin Blanc

Chenin Blanc

Chenin Blanc is an important white grape variety planted in the Anjou-Saumur and Touraine regions of the Loire Valley and the most widely planted varietal grape in South Africa.

In the Loire it produces high quality dry wines in Savenniéres, and luscious sweet, dessert wines in Coteaux du Layon, Bonnezeaux and Quarts de Chaume. In Vouvray and Montlouis it can be dry, medium dry, or sweet, and still or sparkling. Whether dry or sweet, the best Loire Chenin Blancs possess marvellously concentrated rich, honeyed fruit together with refreshingly vibrant acidity. It is Chenin Blanc's high acidity that enable the wines to age so well.

In South Africa Chenin Blanc is easier to grow and is prized for its versatility. It is used as a cheap blending option with Chardonnay, Colombard, and Muscat but also bottled unblended. The best producers keep their yields low and produce impressive mouthfilling wines.
