Description

A bottle bought from Edmund Penning-Rowsell's cellar. Lovely and sweet - very fleshy. Much more structured than the 1990s (Latour and Cheval) just served, also blind. Denser than the Mouton 1982. Very, very easy to like.

Given what I thought this wine would achieve, the 1982 Petrus has not turned out to be nearly as profound as expected. It reveals a certain herbaceousness, and there is significantly less concentration than I initially believed (too much filtration?) along with a cedary spiciness. Tasters who have had no previous experience with this wine will find it to be an outstanding effort that has reached full maturity much faster than some of its peers. It is capable of lasting a long time, but there is an underlying vegetal character, and the 1982 is far less concentrated than the vintages of Petrus that have been produced since 1989. I believe this wine is fully mature, and is capable of lasting another 10-15 years, but it is unlikely to improve. Release price: ($600.00/case)

 It is full-bodied, tannic, and from the best bottles, very concentrated and rich. Other bottles seem somewhat vegetal and roasted, with sweetness but not the prodigious qualities of other bottles. It is hard to know what is really going on. The wine seems to be close to full maturity, but should hold where well-stored for at least another two decades. As a post-script, this wine was, from cask, still to this day one of the most memorable wines I have ever tasted and certainly a perfect wine. From my perspective, it has never lived up to that after bottling, which I suspect involved entirely too much fining and filtration, something not being done since the late eighties at Petrus.

Petrus

Petrus, one of the world's rarest and most expensive wines, was virtually unheard of 30 years ago. It was only when the Moueix family bought a half share in the property in 1962 that its true potential began to be fully realised. The estate is now under the direction of Christian Moueix and oenologist, Jean Claude Berrouet.

The 11.4-hectare vineyard is located on a plateau on the highest part of Pomerol in the far east of the appellation. The topsoil and the subsoil in the vineyard are almost all clay (in neighbouring properties the soil is a mixture of gravel-sand or clay-sand) and Merlot flourishes in this soil. The vineyard is planted with 95% Merlot.

The vines are unusually old and are only replanted after they reach 70 years of age. The grapes are hand-harvested only in the afternoon when the morning dew has evaporated, so as not to risk even the slightest dilution of quality. The grapes are fermented in cement vats and the wine is aged in 100% new oak barrels for 22-28 months. It is bottled unfiltered.

Petrus is extraordinarily rich, powerful, and concentrated, often with characteristics of chocolates, truffles, Asian spices, and ultra-ripe, creamy, black fruits. The wines are usually approachable after a decade or so in the bottle, while the very greatest vintages will continue improving for many more years.

Pomerol

Pomerol

Pomerol is the smallest of Bordeaux's major appellations, with about 150 producers and approximately 740 hectares of vineyards. It is home to many bijou domaines, many of which produce little more than 1,000 cases per annum.

Both the topography and architecture of the region is unremarkable, but the style of the wines is most individual. The finest vineyards are planted on a seam of rich clay which extends across the gently-elevated plateau of Pomerol, which runs from the north-eastern boundary of St Emilion. On the sides of the plateau, the soil becomes sandier and the wines lighter.

For a long time Pomerol was regarded as the poor relation of St Emilion, but the efforts of Jean-Pierre Moueix in the mid-20th century brought the wine to the attention of more export markets, where its fleshy, intense and muscular style found a willing audience, in turn leading to surge in prices led by the demand for such limited quantities.

There is one satellite region to the immediate north, Lalande-de-Pomerol whose wines are stylistically very similar, if sometimes lacking the finesse of its neighbour. There has never been a classification of Pomerol wines.

Merlot

Merlot

The most widely planted grape in Bordeaux and a grape that has been on a relentless expansion drive throughout the world in the last decade. Merlot is adaptable to most soils and is relatively simple to cultivate. It is a vigorous naturally high yielding grape that requires savage pruning - over-cropped Merlot-based wines are dilute and bland. It is also vital to pick at optimum ripeness as Merlot can quickly lose its varietal characteristics if harvested overripe.

In St.Emilion and Pomerol it withstands the moist clay rich soils far better than Cabernet grapes, and at it best produces opulently rich, plummy clarets with succulent fruitcake-like nuances. Le Pin, Pétrus and Clinet are examples of hedonistically rich Merlot wines at their very best. It also plays a key supporting role in filling out the middle palate of the Cabernet-dominated wines of the Médoc and Graves.

Merlot is now grown in virtually all wine growing countries and is particularly successful in California, Chile and Northern Italy.
