2007 Nuits-St Georges, Chaignots,1er Cru Maison Nicolas Potel

Nuits-St Georges, Chaignots,1er Cru Maison Nicolas Potel
Excellent value Burgundy from a smart producer and an accessible vintage. Chaignots has a touch of class!

Les Chaignots, the name probably being derived from the French for ‘little oaks’, is situated on the northern side of Nuits St Georges, at mid slope with a varied sgradient of between eight and 20 per cent. The soil is more alluvial than in the vineyards south of Nuits, with plenty of fine gravel washed down over the centuries by the little river Meuzin.

Wines from Les Chaignots tend to combine the refinement of Vosne Romanée along with the structure and power of Nuits St Georges. The wine has been made by negociant Nicolas Potel, before he left the business which still bears his name.

Nicolas made his reputation by delivering classical Burgundy at affordable prices. The 2007 vintage, one of the earliest harvests on record, offers very juicy wines which are a delight to drink even while still very young. Their charm is in the fruit, rather than the structure.
