2007 Cornas, Les Grands Muriers, Domaine Ferraton

Cornas, Les Grands Muriers, Domaine Ferraton
Domaine Ferraton is a very fine Northern Rhône wine estate which was run until relatively recently by Michel Ferraton and his son Samuel, from the third and fourth generations respectively. A tragic motorcycle accident a decade ago left Samuel paralysed and the Domaine, for all its wonderfully located vineyards, somewhat in abeyance. To the rescue came knight errant Michel Chapoutier, who now owns the estate and oversees the winemaking…no bad thing, given his expertise and near obsession with all things related to Hermitage. Even better is that the winemaking team, led by  Bordeaux-trained Damien Brisset is allowed to do its own thing; therefore Ferraton maintains its own identity, an identity that has been increasingly recognised and lauded over the last few years. Little wonder given the inherent quality of the vines….

The Grands Muriers is located in the centre of the Appellation of Cornas just behind the village itself. The soil is shared between clay, limestone and decomposed granite, the latter known, rather appropriately given its apparent decomposition,  as ‘gore’;  This 100% Syrah wine is dense, with a hint of the sauvage ; it has been matured in oak for  14 months after a generous 30 day maceration.
