Malbrontes Malbec Torrontes, Bodegas Mauricio Lorca

Malbrontes may sound a little like the forgotten child of the author of Wuthering Heights, but is of course nothing to do with high Victorian literature. It is an eye-catching linguistic amalgam of Malbec and Torrentes, Argentina’s signature grape varieties.

In the manner of Côte Rôtie, the white grape adds an aromatic harmony to the generous fruit of the Malbec which is farmed on high- altitude vineyards of Vista Flores in Mendoza. A balanced and pleasingly savoury wine, with plush tannins and fine balancing acidity. Quite restrained by comparison to some Argentinean Malbecs, which is no bad thing, this wine has an elegant and refreshing finish.

One of my top finds this summer has been the 2009 Malbrontes Bodegas Mauricio Lorca (13.5% abv), an unlikely blend of malbec and torrontes whose name sounds more like a footballer than a wine. Surprisingly, it comes from posh London wine merchant Berry Bros & Rudd, who sell it at the very reasonable price of £8.45 (or £7.60 if you buy an unsplit case). It's full of gorgeous, ripe fruit, with the torrontes adding just a hint of floral fragrance.

This gem is a unique blend of Malbec with a squirt of aromatic white Torrontés. The result is a red with fragrance and plenty of juicy fruity flavour. A great fun wine and one to match with barbecues, especially featuring aromatic marinades.

Mendoza, 13.5% abv, Screwcap. 'Malbrontes' (think Jedward or Brangelina) is an - on the face of it - unholy alliance of Malbec and Torrontés, that certainly gives a singular nose. The exotically floral lift of the Torrontés soars through the blueberry and black plum fruit of the Malbec, with a palate that is light and relatively fresh and juicy, the easy-drinking charm and good fruit of the Malbec given a lovely lift of acidity, making this very juicy and enjoyable.
