Description

This is a terrific 100% Mourvèdre wine, good enough to put one in mind of Beaucastel’s Hommage à Jacques Perrin, which is praise indeed! The Mourvèdre is grown on the lower vineyards of the Estate where fine sandy clay soils are punctuated by garrigue and scrubland.

A dark and concentrated wine, this has fine savoury, almost autumnal aromas and a richly concentrated palate, with notes of fig and sousbois complementing the depth of fruit. The wine impresses especially with its finely-wrought tannins, which are very classy and elegant and act as imperious guarantors of a lengthy development.

About this WINE

Domaine Borie de Maurel

Domaine Borie de Maurel

Michel Escande is one of the great characters of the Languedoc. From an early nautical career, he became in the late 1990s one of the leading voices in the successful movement to recognise the soils of Minervois la Livinière as special and worthy, hitherto unheard of in the Languedoc, of its own wine appellation, a cru within a cru as it were.

Borie de Maurel is one of the leading wine estates of the 35 or so in this fine appellation and Michel’s good work has been taken on by his sons Gabriel and Maxime, not to mention their two Percheron mares, Luna and Ninon.

The soils of the Petite Causse in the foothills of the Montagne Nore are dominated by sandstone and clay on the plateaux and by glacial limestone on the steeper ground. The natural approach in vineyard and winery alike is key to the quality and reputation of this wine Domaine.

Mourvèdre

Mourvèdre

Mourvèdre, aka Monastrell in Spain, is a common blending partner of Syrah and Grenache (aka Garnacha in Spain). In Australia and California it can also appear under the name Mataro.

Mourvèdre's bastion in France is Bandol, where it reigns supreme in the red blends and yielding a savoury, gamey, herby wine. It also commonly features in Southern Rhône, Languedoc & Rousillon blends.

The grape needs a warm climate to ripen fully. Its stronghold in Spain are the appellations along the south-east Mediterranean(Murcia, Jumilla, Bullas), where it produces rosé, dry red and sweet fortified wines. Monastrell has played a significant part in Spain’s vinous heritage; it nurtures wines that are deep in colour and richly tannic, sometimes overbearing in their intensity and concentration
