2009 Berrys' Good Ordinary White (Stelvin)

Berrys' Good Ordinary White (Stelvin)
We have reduced the price of our 2009 Good Ordinary White for a limited time, so you can now drink wonderfully classic dry white Bordeaux for less than £6 a bottle and enjoy free next day UK delivery too, if you purchase a case before the end of June.

The dominant grape variety is Sauvignon Blanc, which contributes an appealing, zingy gooseberry-and-nettle aroma to the wine, but alongside it is the Sémillon, another Bordeaux stalwart, which imparts some richer, waxy elements. The bouquet is therefore an interesting blend of green fruit, grapefruit, citrus fruits and lanolin, which becomes more waxy as the wine ages.

The palate is bone-dry, with crisp, lively acidity, and with no oak influence to fatten the wine. It is designed to be drunk young, either as an aperitif or with shellfish and fried fish, and although it has the capacity to age for a few years we recommend it to be drunk young to be enjoyed at its best.

From Dourthe. Tastes as though there is quite a lot of creamy Sémillon here and even a bit of very slightly oily oak. What’s the difference between this and Dourthe’s famous branded white, I wonder…?

(Mostly) sauvignon blanc, but from Bordeaux and not as you know it from New Zealand or the Loire. The sauvignon gives a tang like baked grapefruit while maturing semillon (30 per cent of the blend) supplies a waxy texture: think hay and tinges of woodruff. Who’d have expected such extraordinary value beyond the supermarkets? When I called Vicky Williams at Berrys’ to ask if they’d extend their promotion to the end of June for Telegraph readers (she said yes) she said she’d just bought several cases for her engagement party. What a good idea.

Berrys' Good Ordinary White (Stelvin)
From the ever-reliable Bordeaux wine merchant Dourthe, this is a refreshingly zesty, classic Bordeaux blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon, whose smoky whiff of vanilla and zingy grapefruit-crisp freshness make this dry white reminiscent of good white Graves, only at a fraction of the price.
