2009 Collioure Blanc 'Folio', Coume Del Mas

Collioure Blanc 'Folio', Coume Del Mas
Collioure Blanc “Folio”, a white wine from a warm climate (I think, on balance, in white wines I prefer the texturally broad over the aromatically incisive), from the steep and unforgiving terraces of Roussillon, a short walk from the Spanish border (I know, I’ve done it, all the way to Cadaqués).

The ugly duckling grape is Grenache Gris, but putting up more than a reasonable case as an alternative to Chardonnay, if that’s what you’re used to. Rich, honeyed, acacia scented, this is a powerful wine, carrying its barrel-fermentation seamlessly, testament to Philippe & Nathalie’s skill. Patrick O’Brian lived in Collioure until his death in 2000 and used to make wine from his own vineyard.

It probably wasn’t in the class of Coume del Mas but, as an Aubrey-Maturin graduate of his entire 20 novel canon, my urge to begin the cycle again is never far away with a glass of this to hand.
(Mark Pardoe MW, BBR Wholesale – Feb 2011)

The dramatic and romantic enclave of Collioure nestles in a scenic Mediterranean shelter close to the Pyrenees. Catalonia informs the culture and the pace of life down here. The Folio from Coume Del Mas is a stunning barrel fermented Grenache Gris; rich, honied, with distinctive and refreshing citric acidity to provide a linear profile. Unusual and unusually good.
