2006 Brunello di Montalcino, La Serena, Tuscany

Brunello di Montalcino, La Serena, Tuscany
Intense, spicy/herby nose with hints of meat (sausages?) and a faint medicinal edge. Just lovely on the palate, rich, deep, tannic and exotic in equal measure, big chewy black fruit, crisp acidity and a beautifully balanced, velvety finish. Good with red meat dishes now, La Serena's Brunello di Montalcino will be even better when it's 8-10 years old.
(Chris Pollington, BBR Fine Wine Sales)

Our recent visit to see young Andrea Mantengoli turned up this gem of a wine: aged entirely in one 32 hl Garbellotto slavonian botte, it captures the quality of his 9ha estate, set at 420 metres on the north-eastern shoulder of the Brunello di Montalcino zone.

Brunello di Montalcino, La Serena, Tuscany
The 2006 Brunello di Montalcino is an exciting, full-throttle wine bursting with dark fruit, mocha, chocolate, spices, roasted coffee beans and spices. The intensity of the fruit builds towards the enveloping, round finish. Despite its size, the wine is already pretty open. I don’t think this will be a long-term ager, but it should drink very nicely over the medium term.
