The Sanford and Bendict Vineyard benefits from an unusually cool climate partly because of the unusual conformation of the Santa Ynez Valley, which runs broadly east-west and thus channels sea breezes directly to the vineyard. As a result the style of this wine is always quite European in its restraint. The Californian ripeness is nevertheless very much in evidence, with a bouquet of nectarine, melon and cashew, but underpinning it is a steely acidity and minerality which provides a wonderful structure to the wine. Very fine in the true sense of the word, with bags of elegance, superb length and a real potential for ageing. Drink with full-flavoured seafood dishes or chicken, from now until 2018.
