For those who think that Viura is inherently uninspiring, this wine should make them think again. Alvaro Palacios has built an enviable reputation from championing lesser-known regions and unfashionable varieties.

This white Rioja, although of course not from a lesser-known region, is a fine testament to the expressive potential of the Viura variety, which Alvaro describes, perhaps a little extravagantly, as ‘the Chardonnay of the South’. Light straw colouring, then a nose of pear, white pepper and vanillin. The palate is fascinating, with fruit, butter, nuts and vanillin all evidenced. Richly textured and long.
