2009 Bourgogne Les Cras, Olivier Merlin

Bourgogne Les Cras, Olivier Merlin
How to get great value from Burgundy: buy Bourgogne Rouge from the best producers in a top vintage!

Olivier and Corinne Merlin have been making fabulous Mâconnais wines in their adopted village of La Roche Vineuse since 1987. Their best white wine vineyard is Les Cras, superbly placed on a limestone plateau just above the village. There have always been some red grapes here too, but Olivier was not satisfied with their pedigree so he replanted them with pinot cuttings from Pommard Clos des Epeneaux, guaranteed to provide quality!

The first Bourgogne Rouge Les Cras was made in 2005. Olivier declassifies this cuvee into his regular Bourgogne Rouge in lesser years, but in superb vintages such as 2009 the Cras terroir comes into its own. It is the same sort of Bathonian limestone which is regularly found in the Côte de Nuits.

After fermentation in wooden vats without using the stems, this wine has been aged for 15 months in classic Burgundian 228 litre barrels in Oliver’s deep cool cellar.
