2009 Beaune, Clos des Mouches, 1er Cru, Joseph Drouhin

Beaune, Clos des Mouches, 1er Cru, Joseph Drouhin
Joseph Drouhin’s premier cru Beaune Clos des Mouches is one of this fine firm’s most well-regarded and well-known wines, offering consistently high quality drinking. The 2009 is a weighty wine, yet it manages to stay agile enough to reveal zesty citric and classic apricot hints that will deepen and intrigue from 2014 to 2018. A classic, very agreeable white Burgundy.Maison Joseph Drouhin

There is a great weight of fruit evident on the nose in this Drouhin Beaune without any sense of heaviness. This is certainly a huge wine but it is also a very fine one, with spices at the front and an agreeable lemony finish.Maison Joseph Drouhin

The last vestiges of reduction detract only mildly from the otherwise nuanced and well-layered aromas of peach, citrus and white flowers. The rich flavors retain a fine sense of definition as well as a subtle minerality on the suave, silky and explosively long finish. This is a wine of harmony and grace that should age well.

The 2009 Beaune Clos des Mouches is quite round and seamless for a young Beaune. Yellow stone fruits and minerals are some of the notes that wrap around the palate in this striking white from Drouhin. I especially like to focus and energy of the finish. Though fabulous today, I am very curious to see where the 2009 might be headed over the coming years. In 2009 the estate picked the fruit from this site in nine separate passes. Anticipated maturity: 2014+.

I tasted the 2009s with Jerome Faure-Brac, Drouhin’s head winemaker. Interestingly, Faure-Brac chose to serve these wines a touch on the warm side, so I could observe their strengths and weaknesses more clearly. It was a high stakes move, especially in a warm vintage. I am not sure I would have had the guts to make that decision, but it speaks of great conviction….and the wines came through beautifully. The 2009 harvest began on September 21st, quite late for the year. New oak levels were down sharply, malos were blocked on a number of wines and the estate did no batonnage. The wines were racked once prior to being bottled.
