2010 Côtes du Rhône Viognier, Les Gendrines, Pierre Gaillard

Cotes du Rhone Viognier, Les Gendrines, Pierre Gaillard
Pierre Gaillard’s Viognier here is somewhat unusual in that it falls under the jurisdiction of the Côtes-du-Rhône appellation, it vines located just outside the Condrieu appellation, but treated in such a fashion that there has been more rigour and less yield than in a humble Vin de Pays. Matured in 10% new wood and treated to lees strirring during its elevage; peaches and cream, dried apricots and honeysuckle…..all the usual descriptors are evidenced, voluminously, in deference to a very fine vigneron in a superb vintage.

The Medieval village of Malleval, perched high above the serpentine Rhône, provides a suitably lofty homestead for Pierre Gaillard, one of the most influential and highly respected vignerons in the valley. His legacy seems to be in good hands, if our tasting with his daughter Jeanne and son Pierre-Antoine is anything to go by. This was a fascinating (and lengthy!) barrel tasting, rehearsing the minutiae of differences between parcels and underlining the sheer quality of the vintage.
