2004 Gramona, Gran Reserva III Lustros Cava

Gramona, Gran Reserva III Lustros Cava
The III Lustros Gran Reserva Cava is aged for five years on cork and is a blend of 70% Xarel-Lo and 30% Macabeo. Despite having only 3 grams of sugar, the wine is rich and creamy, discretely decadent with notes of mocha, dried fig and even malt competing for attention on the palate.

As with all of the Gramona family (and so few other Cavas) the natural acidity lends freshness and purity of structure. It is this ripeness allied to this purity which marks out the difference between this and most Champagnes, and the comparison is most favourably angled towards the Cava in this instance.

Gramona, Gran Reserva III Lustros Cava
The light gold colored 2004 Gran Reserva Brut Nature Lustros is a more vinous offering with enticing notes of mineral, spring flowers, almonds, and white peach informing the nose. Mouth-filling, long, and nicely proportioned, it will drink nicely for another 2-3 years.

Gramona, Gran Reserva III Lustros Cava
Here's a wine that makes a nonsense of the idea that Cava is Champagne's low-rent Spanish cousin. One of several genuinely fine sparkling wines made by the Gramona family, it takes the local varieties Xarel-Lo and Macabeo and conjures up a fabulously dense, rich and textured wine, its complex flavour profile calling to mind a Catalan dessert of dried fruit and egg custard. Superb!
