This is his most ‘basic’ wine, but even here, one can tell this has been touched by genius, far more complex and beguiling than any wine at this price has the right to be. The best value wine in the Rhône? Could be.

Jean Louis Chave is, of course, the high priest of the hill of Hermitage. In the last few years he has spread his genius further a-field in both the North and South of the Rhône Valley. Sourced from the very best villages in the Southern Rhône, namely Valréas, Vinsobres and Rasteau, Mon Coeur is a fantastic Côtes Du Rhône, self-evidently punching above its putative weight. The grapes are assessed and blended by Jean Louis himself, his clearly stated aim being to make the finest of all generic Côtes du Rhône.

The relatively high percentage of Syrah, not in itself surprising from the doyen of Hermitage, lends colour and structure to the wine. The Grenache rounds it out and gives a velvety texture and warmth, with the additional touches of Mourvèdre and Cinsualt adding further to the complexity and appeal. The wine is fermented and matured in tank; its weight and gravitas therefore result solely from the sheer quality of the fruit from a famous vintage.
